Lionsgate has officially broken ground on a major new $125 million film and television production studio in Newark’s South Ward, marking a significant milestone for the city’s emergence as a hub for entertainment production. The project, which began construction in December 2025, will be New Jersey’s first purpose-built TV and film studio and is expected to open in 2027. Lionsgate, as the long-term anchor tenant with naming rights, will operate alongside partner Great Point Studios, while stakeholders, including the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) and the Newark Housing Authority, are collaborating to integrate production facilities, soundstages, offices, and support services. The project is expected to transform the local economy and build on New Jersey’s expanding entertainment sector.
Beyond bricks and mortar, the Lionsgate Newark studio is being positioned as a major economic engine for the region, with projections of 600+ long-term jobs and more than $800 million in annual economic impact once fully operational. A Community Benefits Agreement formalized commitments to local hiring, workforce training, and neighborhood investment, including prioritizing Newark residents for both construction and studio jobs, as well as fostering partnerships with local schools to develop industry-related curricula and provide apprenticeships. With its proximity to major transit hubs and its location alongside other production investments in Bayonne and Fort Monmouth, the studio embodies New Jersey’s broader strategy to compete with traditional production centers and cultivate sustainable growth in the creative industry.
