‘Everything is at stake’ for Canada in the U.S. election, says N.J. governor

Phil Murphy, New Jersey’s two-time Democratic governor and president of the Democratic Governors Association, is currently in Canada to talk trade with the provinces and promote his state’s film industry at the Toronto International Film Festival. While he’s north of the border, he’s also stumping for his party’s presidential candidate, U.S. Vice-President Harris, and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, arguing the U.S. will be a stronger trade partner to Canada with them at the helm.

Mission notebook: Canadians love ‘Jersey Shore’ (the show, not the place)

Perhaps it was appropriate that the latest unofficial ROI-NJ survey was taken at the Lightbox, a theater complex in Toronto, during the Toronto International Film Festival. After all, the state is spending part of its economic mission to Canada working to bring more TV shows and movies to New Jersey. So, we won’t take offense that, when a dozen or so Canadians were asked, “What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the words, ‘New Jersey, most said the same thing: “Jersey Shore.”

Economic development dance: Trying to get business — without stealing businesses

Wes Mathews, the CEO of Choose New Jersey, said there is a certain sensitivity that comes on mission trips — or any discussion with companies. “We don’t hard-sell anybody, that’s not our ethos and never has been,” he said. “We just feel we have a really good product to sell in terms of New Jersey, and pick our partners based on that.” Mathews said the governor’s previous mission trips — to Germany, Ireland, Israel, India, Japan, Korea and Taiwan — prove the point.

Energy boost: LaRossa thrilled when Canadian company noted it’s staying in N.J. because of reliability

As the longtime chairman of Choose New Jersey, Public Service Enterprise Group Chair and CEO Ralph LaRossa has sat through more speeches on economic development than he can count. He’s just never been the surprising center of attention. That changed Monday afternoon in Toronto at an event that detailed why RxSource decided to stay in New Jersey. Aziz Hirji, the company’s chief financial officer, said the decision was due in part to the reliability of energy service – something vital to their business.
