New Jersey’s Role in the Past, Present, & Future of U.S. Innovation

The United States is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year, and the state of New Jersey has served as a foundational pillar of American manufacturing, healthcare, and technology since the nation’s inception.

Today, the state boosts innovation through its massive STEM talent pool, state-supported innovation centers, and pioneering companies. Here are some of the innovations of yesteryear that still impact technology today, along with the healthtech advancements happening now in New Jersey.

What historical New Jersey inventions shaped modern industry?

Many notable New Jersey inventions from the 19th and 20th centuries fundamentally changed the course of history. They include:

The Telegraph (1838)

Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail perfected the electromagnetic telegraph at the Speedwell Ironworks in Morristown. This communication breakthrough laid the groundwork for modern global telecommunications. It enabled instantaneous corporate data exchange across vast distances for the first time in human history.

The Incandescent Light Bulb (1879)

Thomas Edison developed the first practical incandescent light bulb at his Menlo Park laboratory. This invention completely changed global operating hours. By providing reliable artificial light, factories and businesses could optimize facility efficiency and safely extend working hours long after sunset. Of course, these light bulbs also made their way into everyday homes and have become one of the most important inventions in U.S. history.

The Transistor (1947)

In December 1947, scientists John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley developed the first working transistor at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey. The breakthrough replaced bulky vacuum tubes with a smaller, more efficient semiconductor device, laying the foundation for modern computers, smartphones, and digital communications. More than 75 years later, the transistor remains a defining example of New Jersey’s legacy as a center of world-changing innovation.

Which modern New Jersey innovations are driving the future of healthtech?

New Jersey continues to produce groundbreaking technologies. Over the last decade, several key innovations have emerged to support global business operations:

SpotitEarly

SpotitEarly is a fascinating early cancer screening test based on breath samples and powered by artificial intelligence and the strong scent detection of trained dogs. New Jersey-based Hackensack Meridian Health has partnered with SpotitEarly to validate its non-invasive approach to early cancer detection. The startup will also work with the Hennessy Institute for Cancer Prevention and Applied Molecular Medicine, part of the Hackensack Meridian John Theurer Cancer Center, and Hackensack University Medical Center.

Upstream Access, Inc.

Cooper University Health Care’s Innovation Center has partnered with Upstream Access, Inc., a Cooper-founded, physician-led medical device start-up developing a novel multi-directional vascular access system. The system is designed to improve endovascular procedures for patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and other vascular conditions.

Cuffless Blood Pressure Monitoring

RWJBarnabas Health and SciTech Scity’s Healthcare Innovation Engine, both based in New Jersey, administered the first FDA-approved cuffless blood pressure patch designed for continuous 24-hour monitoring to support more accurate diagnoses and personalized treatment.

The Biobeat cuffless blood pressure patch program is a pilot initiative from the Healthcare Innovation Engine at SciTech Scity, located at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City. The Healthcare Innovation Engine aims to transform healthcare delivery for patients, families, and caregivers by partnering with digital health startup to address critical care gaps.
