4 Black Innovators Who Lived & Worked in New Jersey

From inventors to artists, New Jersey has been home to many Black pioneers who shaped history through innovation, creativity, and dedication to equity and inclusion. In honor of Black History Month, we’re reflecting on the immense contributions Black individuals have made to society from right here in New Jersey.

Gladys Barker Grauer – The “Mother of Newark Arts” 

Gladys Barker Grauer, often referred to as the “Mother of Newark Arts,” was a trailblazing artist and educator who inspired a generation of creators in New Jersey. Born in 1923 in Ohio, Barker Grauer moved to Newark in 1951. She established her artistic voice at a time when representation of Black artists was almost nonexistent. 

Her notable contributions include founding the AARD Studio Gallary in Newark’s South Ward in 1972. This gallery became a haven for artists who struggled to find equitable space to showcase their work. Beyond her vibrant canvases infused with cultural pride, she used art as a tool for social commentary and empowerment, blending creativity with a powerful message of inclusion. Today, her legacy continues through the thriving arts community she helped build in Newark.

Jessie Redmon Fauset – Voice of the Harlem Renaissance 

Jessie Redmon Fauset was a literary powerhouse whose roots in Camden County, New Jersey, helped shape her remarkable career as a writer, poet, editor, and key figure in the Harlem Renaissance. From 1919 to 1926, she served as the literary editor of the NAACP’s magazine, The Crisis. 

Fauset’s work often highlighted themes of racial identity and equity, focusing on the lives of middle-class African-American families—narratives that were underrepresented by most literature of her era. Through her novels and mentorship of emerging Black authors, Fauset played a significant role in advancing the inclusion of Black voices in literature. Her influence continues to inspire storytellers who honor and preserve diverse experiences.

Lewis Howard Latimer – Innovating Beyond Boundaries

Though born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Lewis Howard Latimer became tightly connected to New Jersey through his groundbreaking work in Thomas Edison’s lab in the 1880s. An ingenious inventor and the son of formerly enslaved parents, Latimer made pivotal contributions to the creation of long-lasting lightbulbs. 

While working at Edison Electric Light Company in Newark, Latimer patented a process for making carbon filaments for incandescent light bulbs. This transformed the functionality and accessibility of electric lighting, making it more affordable and practical for homes. His contributions were integral to the industry, and his work exemplifies the spirit of diversity, creativity, and innovation that New Jersey celebrates today.

John Stanard – Revolutionizing the Kitchen 

John Stanard, often referred to as John Standard, holds a place in history as an inventor who transformed how households approached food storage and preparation. Standard, a Newark native, patented innovative improvements to both refrigerators and oil stoves in the late 19th century. His designs increased efficiency and accessibility, setting new benchmarks in everyday technology. 

While Standard’s story may not be as widely known as other inventors, his contributions are highly significant. His innovations not only paved the way for modern kitchen conveniences but also showcased the critical role of diverse ideas and talents in driving progress.
