In May 2024, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) officially designated 1888 Studios in Bayonne as a Film-Lease Partner Facility, marking a major milestone in the state’s film and media sector. This designation ensures that the studio will remain operational for at least five years and opens the door for future tenants to benefit from increased tax credits through New Jersey’s Film and Digital Media Tax Credit program. 1888 Studios is a transformative project for the state’s growing film and television industry. Developed by Togus Urban Renewal, the massive entertainment campus will feature 23 sound stages and over 1.5 million square feet of production space, making it one of the largest studio complexes in the U.S. The development, which broke ground on a 70-acre former Texaco site, is expected to open in 2026 and significantly boost New Jersey’s reputation as a hub for media production, positioning New Jersey as a major player in the entertainment industry.

1888 Studios joins industry giants like Netflix and Lionsgate, who are also building state-of-the-art production facilities in New Jersey, attracted by the state’s robust tax incentives, proximity to New York, and robust talent pool. The campus is positioned to rival New York’s production capabilities, further cementing the state’s role in the Northeast’s entertainment landscape. Governor Phil Murphy emphasized the studio’s potential to drive both economic and artistic growth, aligning with the state’s broader goals of becoming a premier destination for film and television.
