HAX, a global hardware startup accelerator, has firmly established itself in Newark, New Jersey, as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. Backed by Princeton-based venture capital firm SOSV, HAX established a new U.S. headquarters in Newark in June 2022, recognizing the city’s growing reputation as a center for technology and business. The decision to set up shop in Newark was driven by the city’s strategic location, access to top talent, and strong transportation links. Since its arrival, HAX has been instrumental in helping early-stage hardware startups bring their ideas from prototype to market, contributing to the economic revitalization of Newark and fostering a dynamic startup ecosystem in the region.
Startups in the program will create 2,500 new jobs in the decade ahead and attract millions in new capital. Choose New Jersey and NJEDA responded to the RFI with a fully customized pitchbook. We then arranged a site tour and meetings with Governor Murphy and Audible Founder and Executive Chairman Don Katz. New Jersey committed $25 million to support HAX and SOSV committed to investing $25 million in 100 startups in its first five years.
The accelerator’s success is marked by its ability to attract high-potential startups and venture capital investments. Through HAX’s intensive five-month program, entrepreneurs gain access to expert mentorship, engineering resources, and investor networks. This hands-on support has led to impressive outcomes, with numerous startups launching cutting-edge technologies in sectors like health tech, robotics, and sustainability. HAX’s presence in Newark not only highlights the city’s growing stature in the tech world but also underscores the region’s potential to be a leader in the next generation of hardware innovation.
“It was about finding an ecosystem birthplace for the reindustrialization of the U.S. A place (where) we could find world-class talent close to some of the largest industries in the world. And land to expand with an industrial heritage and an infrastructure that can support a lot of the companies that are investing in — to help them get to their next phase. Newark really has all of this. It’s got an industrial heritage, truly exceptional universities, which are literally a stone’s throw away from us, (with) academic departments that develop not just (intellectual property), but also talent that will shape the world for generations to come.
